Promoting Inclusivity and Empowerment: The Importance of Employment for Individuals with SEN.

Despite his academic qualifications, he has encountered significant challenges securing employment opportunities due to his unique circumstances. Consequently, the once spirited and optimistic young individual has undergone a profound transformation, experiencing a severe blow to his self-esteem that has had far-reaching consequences for himself and his family members. It is disheartening to witness his loss of motivation and self-belief, leading to resignation and disengagement.

His daily routine primarily revolves around playing video games, hesitating when socializing, interacting with peers his age, and establishing meaningful friendships. Sadly, this narrative is shared by numerous other individuals with special educational needs within our community. While their contemporaries have embarked upon adulthood milestones such as starting families, this young man remains solely dependent on his parents for support despite possessing a degree.

In our society, individuals with special educational needs often face significant challenges in finding employment despite completing their education. This lack of employment affects their self-esteem and overall well-being and has a profound impact on their families. This article discusses the importance of addressing this issue and highlights the need for inclusive education systems and vocational programs to support the employment of SEN individuals.

Challenges Faced by SEN Individuals

SEN individuals encounter numerous obstacles when seeking employment. Many struggle to complete their education, while those who do often face difficulty finding suitable jobs. This raises a crucial question regarding the effectiveness of our education system in adequately supporting these individuals. As an educational psychologist, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles SEN students face, including academic failure, college dropout rates, and a lack of employment opportunities.

Revolutionizing Education and Inclusion

In the Middle East, education is progressing, presenting an opportunity to revolutionize the approach to education for students with special needs. By reformulating educational policies, Middle Eastern countries have started promoting the inclusion of SEN students in mainstream schools. However, despite these efforts, the unemployment rate among People of Determination (PoD) in countries like the United Arab Emirates remains alarmingly high, with approximately 93% of PoD individuals being unemployed as of 2019.

The Role of Vocational Training and Skills-Based Programs

While a new approach to the education system is needed, incorporating vocational training and skills-based programs within high schools can enhance SEN students' employability. Often, these individuals struggle to find employment due to a lack of necessary skills and confidence. However, they strongly desire meaning and purpose in their lives. Students can develop valuable skills and gain confidence in pursuing a career by introducing internships and practical work experiences as part of their education.
