Keynote: Teaching for tomorrow: unlocking your superpowers through technology

However, there are many challenges that schools and teachers face that diminish their ability to unlock student potential. According to educationalists such as Sir Ken Robinson, these challenges are systemic. It is often argued that the education system itself doesn’t need to be reformed, it needs to be transformed – and the key to this transformation is not to standardise education, but to personalise it. Yet despite decades of seeking such transformation, it feels to many that not much has changed in practice.

This talk examines this debate in detail and offers a message of hope. At a policy level, reform takes time, but at school level it doesn’t need to.

The metaphor that will be examined in this talk is that of the superhero, Iron Man. Tony Stark was just an ordinary human – but through technology he was able to accomplish extraordinary things. Similarly, through technology, teachers of tomorrow will be able to achieve extraordinarily personalised learning environments, helping to unlock student performance and potential in ways we cannot currently imagine. This talk will overview such emerging and exponential technologies, and argue that the educational revolution is only years away, will be swift, and will have a profoundly positive impact on humanity. Incredibly exciting times lie ahead for us all.
