Preparing for the new academic year http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/ en Back to School: Easing the Transition After Summer Vacation http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/gess-talks/articles/back-school-easing-transition-after-summer-vacation

As summer hoildays draw to a close in the UAE, the excitement of a new school year (for international schools) and new term (for Asian schools) begins to build. The summer break offers a much-needed respite for children, allowing them to recharge and explore. However, this extended downtime can also lead to “summer learning loss,” where students may experience a decline in academic skills due to the hiatus from structured learning. According to a study published in Review of Educational Research, students can lose up to 2-3 months of math and reading skills over the summer. Add to this the fact that, globally, there has been an unprecedented decline in teenagers' math, reading, and science skills in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the situation warrants the urgent need for both parents and teachers to act intentionally and implement measures to address these setbacks.

To combat summer learning loss while still allowing for relaxation, many families engage in creative activities. For example, educational outings such as travel, museum visits or nature hikes offer learning opportunities in the outdoors. Family game nights and interactive activities like cooking or gardening can also stimulate children’s cognitive skills while keeping the environment fun and engaging. The American Psychological Association highlights that downtime allows children to develop creativity and emotional resilience, which are equally important for academic success.

The transition back to school following the holiday period can present a complex set of challenges for students, primarily due to disruptions in their established academic routines. Those with Special Educational Needs or social anxiety in particular, have a set of challenges that are layered and nuanced. Additionally, the psychological shift from the unstructured, leisure-oriented nature of holidays to the demands of a rigorous school schedule can induce anxiety and resistance. This adjustment period therefore must begin early, and needs to be marked by a realignment of daily habits and a reorientation towards academic goals, which can be particularly challenging for both students and educators.

Three Tips for a Smooth Transition Back to School

1. Establish a Routine Early: don’t let ‘Back to School’ come as a surprise. Gradually reintroduce a school-like schedule a few weeks before school starts. Research from the University of California, Los Angeles suggests that easing into a structured routine helps children adjust more smoothly. Begin by setting consistent bedtimes and wake-up times, and reintroduce a few educational activities such as reading or problem-solving games/tasks and activities.

2. Encourage Positive Conversations About School: Foster excitement for the upcoming school year/term through positive discussions. A study from the University of Pennsylvania indicates that children’s attitudes towards school can be shaped by their parents’ enthusiasm. Talk about the new opportunities and experiences that await them, and avoid focusing on the end of summer as a loss. It will be prudent of me not to portray schools as utopias where challenges are absent. Children face real struggles at school, including difficulties with friendships and negative experiences that can impact their academic success. Positive conversations with students include helping them understand that it is ok to not be ok, that it is normal to encounter difficulties and that seeking support is a constructive approach. By guiding them towards people, resources and support systems, we can reassure students that they are not alone in their struggles and that help is available to them.

3. Set Realistic Goals and Manage Time Wisely: In a world where constant notifications, distractions, and the glare of a personal screen are pervasive, imparting time management skills to our children is increasingly crucial. It is not only about organizing their daily activities but also about helping them understand how to make wise, deliberate and thoughtful decisions about their time. Help your child set achievable academic and personal goals for the upcoming school year/term. Teach them effective time management skills by creating a balanced schedule that includes time for study, extracurricular activities, and relaxation. Research indicates that children who learn to set specific, manageable goals are more likely to succeed academically. Avoid overloading their schedules to ensure they have time to unwind and enjoy their pursuits. A well-planned, flexible schedule that avoids burnout can support a healthy balance between work and leisure.

As summer winds down, it’s essential for parents to help their children transition back to a learning mindset. The return to school can embody both excitement and apprehension. Acknowledging that this period is characterized by both promise and challenge enables us to support students effectively, helping them to embrace new opportunities while addressing the uncertainties they may face. Remember they need to be seen, heard and supported.

Enjoy the last days of summer and all the best for an exciting new school year/term ahead.

Written by: Sydney Atkins, Vice Academic Year http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/gess-talks/articles/thriving-age-ai-guide-educators-new-academic-year

As the new academic year begins, educators are facing a landscape dramatically shaped by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). While AI presents exciting opportunities to enhance teaching and learning, it also introduces challenges that require thoughtful adaptation. This article provides a roadmap for educators to thrive in this new environment, offering strategies to leverage AI effectively while maintaining the human touch that is central to education.

1. Embrace AI as a Collaborative Tool, Not a Replacement

AI should be viewed as a partner in the educational process, rather than a threat to traditional teaching roles. Tools like AI-powered grading systems, personalized learning platforms, and virtual tutors can automate routine tasks and provide individualized support to students. This allows educators to focus on what they do best: inspiring and mentoring students.

Actionable Tip: Identify AI tools that can help streamline your workload. For example, use AI to automate administrative tasks like attendance tracking or grading, freeing up more time for lesson planning and student interaction.

2. Foster Digital Literacy and Critical Thinking As AI becomes more integrated into education, it is crucial to equip students with the skills to navigate and critically assess AI-driven content. This includes understanding how AI works, its potential biases, and its impact on society. Educators should encourage students to question the outputs of AI tools and think critically about the information they consume.

Actionable Tip: Incorporate discussions about AI ethics and digital literacy into your curriculum. Use real-world examples to illustrate how AI can be both a powerful tool and a potential source of misinformation.

3. Personalize Learning Experiences AI offers unparalleled opportunities to tailor educational experiences to individual student needs. Adaptive learning platforms can adjust the difficulty of assignments based on student performance, ensuring that each student is challenged at an appropriate level. This personalized approach can help close learning gaps and keep students engaged.

Actionable Tip: Experiment with AI-driven platforms that offer personalized learning paths. Use the data these tools provide to identify students who may need additional support or enrichment.

4. Cultivate a Growth Mindset in the Face of AI The rapid advancement of AI can be intimidating, but it also offers educators the chance to model a growth mindset for their students. Embrace the learning curve associated with new technologies and be open to experimenting with AI in your teaching. By doing so, you demonstrate resilience and adaptability—key traits for success in the AI era.

Actionable Tip: Take advantage of professional development opportunities focused on AI in education. Engage in online courses, webinars, and workshops to stay updated on the latest AI tools and teaching strategies.

5. Maintain the Human Element in Education While AI can enhance many aspects of education, it cannot replace the empathy, intuition, and connection that educators bring to the classroom. Building strong relationships with students, understanding their unique needs, and providing emotional support are more important than ever in an AI-driven world.

Actionable Tip: Make time for regular check-ins with your students, whether through face-to-face meetings or virtual platforms. Use these interactions to provide personalized guidance and build a supportive learning environment.

6. Collaborate and Share Best Practices The integration of AI into education is a collective journey. Educators can benefit immensely from sharing their experiences, challenges, and successes with AI. Collaborating with colleagues to explore new tools, strategies, and approaches can lead to innovative solutions that enhance learning for all students.

Actionable Tip: Join educator communities and forums where AI in education is discussed. Participate in peer-led workshops or set up regular meetings with colleagues to share insights and resources related to AI tools.

7. Keep Ethical Considerations at the Forefront As AI becomes more prevalent in education, ethical considerations must remain a priority. Educators should be aware of the potential for AI to reinforce biases or infringe on student privacy. It is essential to use AI responsibly, ensuring that it enhances rather than detracts from the educational experience.

Actionable Tip: Review the ethical guidelines and data privacy policies of any AI tools you use in your classroom. Make informed decisions about the technology you adopt, and educate students about the ethical implications of AI.

Conclusion The age of AI presents educators with a unique opportunity to enhance their teaching and better support their students. By embracing AI as a collaborative tool, fostering critical thinking, personalizing learning experiences, and maintaining the human element in education, educators can navigate this new landscape with confidence. As you step into the new academic year, let AI be a partner in your journey, helping you to innovate, inspire, and succeed.

Posted date

2 months 4 weeks ago

Short title

Thriving in the Age of AI: A Guide for Educators in the New Academic Year

Short summary

As the new academic year begins, educators are facing a landscape dramatically shaped by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

Other topics

Preparing for the new academic year

Rate

Select ratingGive it 1/5Give it 2/5Give it 3/5Give it 4/5Give it 5/5Cancel rating

No votes yet

Migrate nid

13929

Top story

On

Article main topic

Preparing for the new academic year

Redirected

Off

Moved to features

Off

Lead image:

New batch

Off

redirected

Off

Mon, 26 Aug 2024 10:11:08 +0000 Feedimporter 13929 at http://www.gesseducation.com/europe Settling into a new year http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/gess-talks/articles/settling-new-year

Helping your child settle into a nursery can be challenging. The first days can be tough for both you and your child, especially if it's the first time you're leaving them in someone else's care when you return to work. To support your child's transition, it's essential to acknowledge and manage your feelings of separation.

Here are some key points to remember:

• Create a consistent drop-off routine to help children feel secure.

• Say a cheerful goodbye and reassure your child that you will be back soon to help boost their

• Use reassuring language and gestures to instill confidence in your child.

• Be honest with your child about your return time, rather than making false promises.

Children who are starting nursery may display various reactions such as excitement, sleep problems, refusal to eat, regression in habits, or seeking comfort items. These behaviours tend to resolve as the child becomes more comfortable participating in group activities and enjoying their time at the nursery. The settling-in period may take from 2 days up to a few months.

Ensuring trust is key for a smooth nursery transition. Show trust in the nursery by asking questions and checking the quality of care. Your optimism can greatly influence your child's adjustment. Share positive thoughts about the nursery, highlight the enjoyable activities and new friends they can find, and reassure them about your return.

Help your child adjust by gradually introducing them through short visits to understand you'll come back. Share your child's preferences, routines, and relevant details with the educators for a smoother transition. Offer a familiar item from home for comfort. Take time to say goodbye positively to reassure your child. Remember, the educators support and care for your child, but you're irreplaceable as a parent. Feeling guilty or anxious is normal; with planning and help, both of you can navigate this phase. Here are essential strategies administrators can implement to achieve these goals and integrated recommendations for continuous improvement.

Comprehensive Professional Development for Teachers

1. Curriculum Mastery and Assessment Techniques Before the start of the school year, administrators should organize professional development (PD) sessions focused on the curriculum. These sessions should cover the intricacies of the curriculum, ensuring that teachers are confident in their subject matter and teaching methods. Additionally, training in both formative and summative assessment techniques is crucial. Teachers need to understand how to effectively evaluate student progress, identify areas for improvement, and adjust their teaching strategies accordingly. To further enhance these PD sessions, implement ongoing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that meet regularly throughout the year. These PLCs can facilitate continuous learning, collaboration, and the introduction of new educational research and innovative teaching methods.

2. Data-Driven Instruction and Personal Learning Plans (PLPs)

PD sessions should also emphasize the importance of data in informing instruction. Teachers must be equipped with the skills to analyze student data and design personalized learning plans (PLPs) that cater to individual student needs. Teachers can create targeted interventions that support student growth and achievement by understanding how to interpret data. Customize PD sessions to address different teacher groups specific needs and interests. For instance, new teachers might benefit from mentorship programs and classroom management workshops, while experienced teachers could explore advanced pedagogical techniques and leadership training.

3. Special Education and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)

Special education teachers or education specialists should have dedicated time to review students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) before the school year begins. Administrators can facilitate meetings between these specialists and general education teachers to discuss the goals and objectives outlined in the IEPs. This collaborative approach ensures that all teachers are aware of the specific needs of their students and can anticipate potential challenges, creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Provide opportunities for special education teachers to receive specialized training on the latest best practices and technologies in special education. This can enhance their ability to support students with diverse needs effectively

Immersive Introductory Experiences for Students

1. Orientation Programs

Incoming students should be given an immersive introductory experience that familiarizes them with the school environment, classroom rules, and expectations. Administrators can organize orientation programs, including campus tours, meet-and-greet sessions with teachers, and interactive activities that help students feel welcomed and comfortable in their new surroundings. Implement student mentorship programs that pair incoming students with senior students as mentors. This provides additional support, guidance, and community for new students.

2. Interactive Workshops and Activities

Incorporating interactive workshops and activities into the orientation program can help students understand the school's culture and values. These sessions can cover school rules, the importance of respect and collaboration, and tips for academic success. Administrators can foster a sense of belonging and community by engaging students in meaningful activities. Continuously seek feedback from students, parents, and guardians about the orientation program to identify areas for enhancement. Adjust the program annually based on this feedback to better meet the needs of incoming students

Ensuring Continuous Support and Communication

1. Regular Check-Ins and Feedback Mechanisms

Administrators should establish regular check-ins and feedback mechanisms throughout the school year to support teachers and students. This could include periodic meetings to discuss progress, address concerns, and celebrate successes. By maintaining open lines of communication, administrators can ensure that any issues are promptly addressed and that everyone feels supported. Utilize technology platforms to facilitate regular check-ins and feedback. Online surveys, virtual meetings, and digital communication tools can enhance accessibility and engagement among teachers, students, and parents.

2. Collaborative Planning Time

Providing teachers with collaborative planning time fosters teamwork and professional growth. Administrators should schedule regular time for teachers to collaborate, share best practices, and develop innovative teaching strategies. This collaborative approach enhances teacher effectiveness and contributes to a more cohesive and supportive school community. Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration by organizing joint planning sessions for teachers from different subjects. This can lead to the development of integrated projects and a more holistic educational experience for students.

Preparing for a new academic year requires thoughtful planning and a proactive approach from school administrators. By investing in comprehensive professional development for teachers, creating immersive introductory experiences for students, and ensuring continuous support and communication, administrators can lay the foundation for a successful and productive school year. These efforts not only enhance the educational experience for students but also empower teachers to excel in their roles, ultimately leading to a thriving school community.

Consider implementing ongoing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and monitoring metrics to gauge success and room for improvement. This means a relentless focus on seeking continuous areas for improvement, ensuring a collaborative environment where teachers and students feel prepared, supported, and motivated to achieve their best.

Start planning your professional development sessions today and create a welcoming orientation program for your incoming students. Together, we can make this academic year the most successful one yet!

Dr. Emanuel Vincent brings over 25 years of experience as a consultant and leader in education at PGC (Pinkgrape Consulting). – A Culmination of The Transition Process http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/gess-talks/articles/starting-new-school-year-%E2%80%93-culmination-transition-process

As children get older these transitions cover greater distance from their primary carers and home base. Babies only a few days old transition from one caregiver to another, and older children move between home, school and activities each day; because of these experiences, children could be considered transition experts. International learners face more extensive transitions when moving countries and may face new language challenges. Young children and adolescents all need support to ensure transitions have a lasting positive impact on life and learning. At the International Curriculum Association (ICA) we advocate for managing the journey of transition between school phases and to new classrooms. Best practice emerges within agreed processes and strategies built on collaborative planning, management and monitoring from all stakeholders. The first days of a new school year should be the culmination of efforts to plan for all aspects of transition.

Welcoming new learners

Teachers should take time to get to know new learners rather than jumping straight into content coverage; developing positive relationships will reap learning and classroom management benefits throughout the year. Building bonds and developing a sense of belonging can be transformative for children. Establish an inclusive classroom where everyone feels represented. A child will seek out connections, expecting their voice, interests and contributions, friendships and learning to be valued.

Children joining an established class or year group will need to be introduced to organisational elements and inducted into the culture of the school. Exposing them to the hidden curriculum more explicitly in the opening days of school can help ease this transition.

“The hidden curriculum includes implicit rules and norms that educators pass on without consciously realizing or teaching them, including interactions, modelling, systems, relationships, communication styles, and behaviours that take place in a school.”

3 Ways to Harness the Hidden Curriculum, Anindya Kundu, ASCD, September 2023

Early Years settings, primary schools and secondary schools while all encouraging independence will have different boundaries and opportunities for children to exercise this. Learners need to be aware of any organisational structures and support systems as well as expectations and responsibilities. Guiding children to develop self-management skills and resilience reaps short-term benefits and will ease future transitions.

Shifting social dynamics can present both opportunities and challenges. A new school may be much larger or smaller than previously experienced requiring children to adjust. It is important to encourage children to initiate and maintain positive relationships with peers by being friendly, respectful, and inclusive. The Personal Learning Goals of the ICA equip learners with attitudes and dispositions they can harness for successful transition, including collaboration, adaptability and empathy.

Multiple stakeholders, multiple perspectives

Different people play different but equally valuable roles in transitions. Successful transitions involve communication and collaboration between children, parents and families, teaching teams and school leaders. Each stakeholder will have their own viewpoints and expectations of what a successful transition feels like, looks like and results in; these viewpoints and expectations derive from people’s own experiences of transition. These may be very different from what is now known to support children best. Puberty and the teenage years add further complexity to transitions, as adolescents face unique challenges and changes that require additional support and understanding.

Teachers should aim to support each child effectively as they develop a sense of ease and belonging so that their educational journey can continue successfully. Parental participation in their child’s education influences child outcomes positively, involving them in the transition process and welcoming them to the new school setting is good practice, regardless of the child’s age. Parents expect to see that their children will be safe, happy and valued. They want their child to make a good start, and be respected, listened to, and supported within their ongoing learning and learning in their new context.

Children approach and experience change and transition in different ways. High levels of well-being indicate that a child’s transition process has been planned and managed well on an emotional level. High levels of involvement indicate that a child’s learning journey across the transition has been planned and managed well.

Curriculum connections

Transitions within a school and across education phases present opportunities to connect the curriculum. How you find out what learners should already know and can do may be possible through long-term planning or curriculum sequencing documents. When children are new to a school either as individuals or whole cohorts time should be dedicated to finding out where learners are and what they can bring to the current study. Building connections between previous and current learning strengthens learning; while looking back may seem counter-intuitive it helps to consolidate new learning.

Closing paragraphs

Transition to a new learning environment, whether from home to school, across years within an early years school/setting, from the early years phase to the primary/elementary phase, or one school to another, presents challenges for many children. From the learners’ perspective, planned efforts to ease transition will successfully maintain their full participation in the learning process and will reap countless benefits within and beyond the classroom. How will you plan to make learners' first days of the new school year the start of an engaging, successful and enjoyable learning journey?

By Laura James, Jacqueline Harmer & Lee Hendricks – Curriculum Leads for the International Curriculum Association, IEYC, IPC and IMYC.

Posted date

3 months 2 weeks ago

Short title

Starting A New School Year – A Culmination of The Transition Process

Short summary

Childhood itself is an ongoing process of transition; Although it may not always feel like it, amidst the operational necessities of school administration, the beginning of the school year is a profound opportunity to ignite passion, foster growth, and make an indelible impact on the lives of students and staff.

So … a few thoughts for the beginning of the year … all offered with a deep love for, and belief in, every school leader out there …

• "Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means." – so, it is reported, said Albert Einstein. The essence of effective leadership lies in a compelling vision … but this vision requires you to channel it, and make it visible. A great vision is more than simply a strategic goal; it is a story that speaks to the heart. As an international school leader, your vision will encapsulate academic excellence, cultural richness, inclusivity, and the holistic development of your students. Start this academic year by vividly articulating this vision to your community. Paint it with words that inspire, and watch as it transforms from a mere idea into a shared mission, embraced by all.

• In the intricate mosaic of an international school, trust and collaboration are the bedrock. Remember always to embrace the diversity of your staff and students by actively fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. Regular team meetings, professional learning communities, and informal gatherings can weave strong, trusting relationships (you know that!) … and remember, trust is built through consistent actions, transparent communication, and genuine empathy. I am not saying anything that you don’t already know, or want to achieve … so, commit to it. Show your staff that you believe in their capabilities and are passionate about their professional growth.

• Empathy is not just a leadership skill; it is a necessity, especially in the complex, culturally international arena in which you operate. Breathe, and take the time to truly understand the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of your students and staff. Foster an environment that celebrates cultural diversity and sees it as a strength. This year the players reaching the latter stages continue to not only demonstrate their incredible expertise, but in many cases, the resilience necessary to win, and ‘wow’ the fans.

Since taking a step back from the professional game, tennis superstar, Roger Federer, eight times Wimbledon winner and all-time record-holder, continues to attract media attention. Recently, I came across his thought-provoking Commencement Address at Dartmouth College in the US – he shared some quick tips on tennis technique – and plenty more to inspire those graduating, about the importance of personal drive and attitude.

Federer explained his annoyance when commentators described the ease with which he won those championships and others around the world, ‘Effortless is a myth’ he explained, ‘The truth is, I had to work very hard to make it look easy.’

He revealed he won 80% of the 1,526 singles matches played, then asked the audience what percentage of points they thought he had gained.

Turns out it was just 54%!

He went on to say, ‘When you’re playing a point, it is the most important thing in the world. But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you. This mindset is crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point, and the next one after that, with intensity, clarity and focus’.

Federer continued, ’But negative energy is wasted energy. You want to become a master at overcoming hard moments.’

The truth is, whatever game you play in life, sometimes you’re going to face adversity and lose. A point, a match, a season, a job – the same in education, where each term can be a real roller coaster with many ups and downs - and it’s natural to doubt yourself.

There are lessons for all of us and in particular the importance of being resilient and able to overcome the hard moments. Resilience is having the capacity to withstand or quickly recover from difficulties. It means acknowledging the situation, not dwelling on disappointments, learning from mistakes and challenges, and moving forward.

Perfectionism is one trait that many educators have, which can challenge their resilience. Characterised by black-and-white thinking – it’s the tendency to see all or nothing, and it’s easy to become discouraged.

If a lesson, meeting or other plan does not go as expected, there is little point in dwelling on the negative, in the same way as Roger Federer ignored the last point. Instead focus on what would have made it better and bring this to the next point you play.

Adopt a growth mindset, focus on improving and embracing failures as a chance to learn something new, meaning there can be development. Next time, you’ll be more prepared, do a better job, or at the very least not be down about it. This isn’t new to educators, and it is perhaps a good time to revisit in the current environment.

Professor Carol Dweck, Stanford University, identifies 5 attributes of teachers with a growth mindset: they take responsibility for improving their practice; see setbacks and feedback as an opportunity to learn and grow their skills; actively seek learning opportunities and new challenges; have positive and high expectations of their students and use growth mindset language professionally and personally.

Being compassionate is important. Teachers and leaders naturally display compassion to their students and colleagues, and yet can find it difficult to practise self-compassion. According to Kristen Neff, Science of People, self-compassion is made up of three components: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness.

• Self-kindness means being gentle to ourselves. Changing negative thoughts – worries, judgemental comments and complaints - into positive ones, by practicing positive self-talk; caring for our bodies and minds with healthy food, exercise and enjoyable activities; resisting being people pleasers; and giving hugs to those you love.

• Common humanity is recognising that all people suffer, struggle, fail, and feel separated or alone sometimes.

• Mindfulness is being in the present moment. When you’re struggling, focusing in on the here and now can provide positive energy, and help you escape from negative thoughts. Resilience can also be challenged by organisational culture, and the actions of those around us, especially during times of change. So, what steps might you take?

1. Prioritise self-care – this includes physical exercise, hobbies, reading, or simply taking time to relax. Ensure time for yourself to reduce stress and improve work-life balance; add it to your calendar to make it happen.

2. Develop your support network - relationships with colleagues, friends and family, provide emotional support, alternative perspectives, and practical advice during challenging times.

3. Set realistic goals and boundaries - establish clear boundaries between work and personal life, to prevent overworking and allow time to recharge.

4. Engage with professional development - stay updated with the latest research and strategies. Continuous learning enhances confidence and competence, equipping you to handle challenges.

5. Stay positive and practice gratitude - keeping a gratitude journal or reflecting on things you're thankful for, improves your overall outlook and resilience.

6. Maintain a healthy lifestyle – eat, sleep, and stay hydrated. It is not always easy, and we know many in educators struggle with good sleep – yet addressing all of these, makes it easier to handle stress, and bounce back from setbacks.

7. Foster a positive work environment - support colleagues and contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment – significantly impacts overall job satisfaction.

8. Embrace flexibility and adaptability - in the ever-changing education landscape, being flexible and adaptable is crucial. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and remain open to new approaches and ideas.

9. Seek professional help when needed – if you're struggling with stress, anxiety, or other mental health issues, seek professional help.

Building resilience is hard work, it needs regular attention and practise. But by developing it, you will be more prepared and ready to face any challenges or stressful situations that come your way, remember Federer – ‘effortlessness is a myth’.

For more information and support on improving personal wellbeing please contact welbee.co.uk.

                                       - Ends-

<span st_url="http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/gess-talks/articles/%E2%80%98effortless-myth%E2%80%99-building-personal-resilience" st_title="‘Effortless is a myth’ - The role of school leaders, including principals, administrators, and department heads, is crucial in setting the tone and direction for the entire institution. Effective preparation not only ensures a smooth start but also lays the groundwork for sustained success throughout the year. Here are key strategies to help educational leaders get ready for the new school year.

1. Reflect and Assess

Before diving into the new school year, it's essential for leaders to reflect on the past year. What were the successes? Where were the challenges? Conducting a thorough assessment helps in understanding what worked and what didn’t. This reflective practice should involve feedback from teachers, students, and parents. Surveys, focus groups, and meetings can provide valuable insights.

2. Set Clear Goals and Priorities With reflections in hand, leaders should set clear, measurable goals for the upcoming year. These goals should align with the school’s mission and vision and address key areas such as academic performance, student well-being, and community engagement. Prioritizing these goals helps in focusing efforts and resources effectively. It's important to communicate these goals to the entire school community to foster a shared sense of purpose.

3. Professional Development for Staff Teachers and staff are the backbone of any educational institution. Providing them with professional development opportunities is crucial for keeping them updated with the latest educational trends and pedagogical strategies. Workshops, seminars, and collaborative planning sessions can be organized to enhance their skills and knowledge. Investing in teacher development not only improves classroom instruction but also boosts morale and retention.

4. Foster a Positive School Culture

A positive school culture is the foundation of a thriving educational environment. Leaders should strive to create a culture of respect, inclusion, and collaboration. This can be achieved through regular team-building activities, open communication channels, and recognizing and celebrating achievements. A supportive culture encourages students and staff to perform at their best and fosters a sense of belonging.

5. Plan for Student Support

Understanding and addressing the diverse needs of students is critical for their success. Leaders should ensure that systems are in place to support students academically, emotionally, and socially. This includes providing access to counseling services, special education resources, and extracurricular activities. Creating an inclusive environment where all students feel supported and valued is paramount.

6. Engage with Parents and the Community

Strong partnerships with parents and the community enhance the educational experience. Leaders should actively seek ways to involve parents in the school’s activities and decision-making processes. Regular communication through newsletters, social media, and parent-teacher meetings keeps parents informed and engaged. Collaborating with community organizations can also provide additional resources and opportunities for students.

7. Leverage Technology

In today’s digital age, technology plays a significant role in education. Leaders should ensure that the school’s technological infrastructure is up to date and that teachers are comfortable using digital tools to enhance learning. Implementing learning management systems, virtual classrooms, and online resources can greatly benefit both students and teachers.

8. Prepare for Contingencies

The past few years have highlighted the importance of being prepared for unforeseen circumstances. Leaders should develop and review contingency plans for emergencies, including health crises, natural disasters, and security threats. Ensuring that staff and students are familiar with these plans through regular drills and training sessions is crucial for safety and continuity. 9. Promote Well-being The well-being of students and staff should be a top priority. Leaders should promote a balanced approach to education that includes physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Initiatives such as mindfulness programs, wellness workshops, and adequate breaks can help reduce stress and improve overall health.

10. Monitor and Adjust

Finally, leaders should continually monitor progress towards their goals and be willing to make adjustments as needed. Regular check-ins with staff, students, and parents provide valuable feedback that can inform ongoing improvements. Being flexible and responsive ensures that the school remains on track to achieve its objectives.

Conclusion

Preparing for a new school year is a complex but rewarding process. By reflecting on past experiences, setting clear goals, investing in professional development, fostering a positive culture, supporting students, engaging with the community, leveraging technology, preparing for contingencies, promoting well-being, and monitoring progress, educational leaders can set the stage for a successful and enriching academic year. Effective leadership is the cornerstone of a thriving educational environment, and with the right preparation, leaders can make a lasting impact on their schools and communities.

<div Academic Year: A Principal’s Guide to Onboarding New Staff in the UAE http://www.gesseducation.com/europe/gess-talks/articles/preparing-new-academic-year-principal%E2%80%99s-guide-onboarding-new-staff-uae

Ah, the start of a new academic year. It’s that magical time when the smell of fresh stationery and fresh attitudes fills the air, and the halls of schools across the UAE echo with the sounds of new beginnings. For principals, it’s a whirlwind of excitement, anticipation, and let’s be honest, a fair bit of chaos. Among the myriad of tasks, one of the most critical is onboarding new staff. So how can we ensure a smooth onboarding and welcome for some returning and many new to the UAE teachers and leaders who are keen to get stuck it?

1. The Welcome Wagon: Rolling Out the Red Carpet

First impressions matter. Your new staff members are probably feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. Think of their first day as the educational equivalent of a red carpet event. You want them to feel like they’ve just joined the Oscars of educational institutions. Tip: Prepare a welcome kit that includes essential information about the school, a map (because some schools are labyrinthine), and a few goodies like school-branded mugs or notepads. Throw in a “Welcome to the UAE” guide if they’re new to the country, complete with tips on where to get the best shawarma and how to survive a summer heatwave.

2. Orientation Overload: Avoiding Information Fatigue

Orientation sessions are crucial, but there’s a fine line between informative and overwhelming. You want to ensure your new staff knows the ropes without making them feel like they’re drinking from a fire hose. Tip: Break down the orientation into manageable chunks. Instead of a single marathon session, spread it out over a few days. Mix up presentations with interactive activities and tours. And remember, a little humour goes a long way. Use funny anecdotes or light-hearted icebreakers to keep the mood upbeat.

3. Mentorship Magic: Pairing the Right People

Pairing new staff with experienced mentors is like arranging a perfect marriage – it can make or break the experience. A good mentor can provide guidance, support, and a friendly face in the staff room.

Tip: Choose mentors who are not only experienced but also have a positive attitude and a willingness to help. Encourage regular check-ins and provide a framework for these mentorship relationships to thrive. And hey, if they hit it off and end up being besties, all the better!

4. Cultural Immersion: Embracing the UAE Way

The UAE is a unique melting pot of cultures, and understanding the local customs and traditions is essential for new staff. From knowing when to say “Eid Mubarak” to understanding the nuances of local etiquette, cultural competence is key.

Tip: Organize a cultural immersion session as part of the onboarding process. Invite local speakers or even take a field trip to cultural sites. Make it fun and interactive – perhaps a cooking class where they can learn to make traditional Emirati dishes. And always remind them of the golden rule: never underestimate the power of a good cup of Arabic coffee.

5. Tech-Savvy Staff: Bridging the Digital Divide

In this digital age, being tech-savvy is no longer optional. From virtual classrooms to digital grading systems, new staff need to be comfortable with the technology that powers your school.

Tip: Provide hands-on training sessions for the essential tech tools used in your school. Create a tech buddy system where less tech-savvy staff can lean on their more digitally inclined colleagues. And for a bit of fun, maybe host a “tech trivia” night where they can test their knowledge and win some tech gadgets. Be mindful not to overwhelm new staff with digital tools- I know they are all important!!! But better have them remember 2 than forget 5!

6. The Social Buddy System: No One Left Behind

Starting a new job can be lonely, especially in a new country. Implementing a social buddy system can help new staff feel included and supported from day one.

Tip: Pair new staff with a buddy who has been at the school for a while. Encourage them to meet regularly, perhaps over coffee or lunch, to discuss any challenges or questions. A buddy can also help with practical things, like understanding DEWA, driving licenses or navigating the best routes to avoid the infamous UAE traffic.

7. Professional Development: Investing in Growth

Continuous professional development is key to keeping your staff engaged and effective. From workshops to conferences, ensure there are plenty of growth opportunities. Tip: Create a professional development calendar for the year, highlighting key training sessions, workshops, and conferences. Encourage new staff to set professional goals and support them in achieving these. And don’t forget to celebrate their achievements – perhaps with a “Teacher of the Month” award.

8. Feedback Fiesta: Open Channels of Communication

Regular feedback helps new staff understand what they’re doing well and where they can improve. Create a culture of open communication where feedback is a two-way street.

Tip: Schedule regular check-ins with new staff to provide constructive feedback and listen to their concerns. Encourage them to share their thoughts and suggestions. And remember, feedback should be a celebration of achievements as much as it is about areas for improvement – so keep it positive and encouraging.

9. Team Building: Fostering a Sense of Community Building a strong, cohesive team is essential for a positive school environment. Organize team-building activities that help new staff bond with their colleagues.

Tip: Plan a variety of team-building activities, from casual get-togethers to more structured team-building exercises. Consider a mix of activities to cater to different preferences. And don’t forget the power of food – a potluck lunch where everyone brings a dish from their home country can be a great way to share cultures and build camaraderie.

10. The Human Touch: Personal Connections Matter

In the rush of administrative tasks, it’s easy to forget the personal touch. Taking the time to get to know your new staff on a personal level can make a big difference in how welcomed they feel.

Tip: Make an effort to learn a bit about each new staff member – their interests, their family, and their background. Small gestures, like remembering their birthday or asking about their weekend, can go a long way in building personal connections. And, of course, keep the door open – metaphorically and literally – for any concerns or just a friendly chat.

Final Thoughts: Laugh a Little Preparing for a new academic year is a monumental task, but it doesn’t have to be all stress and no fun. Injecting a bit of humour and light-heartedness into the process can make it more enjoyable for everyone involved. After all, laughter is the best way to build a positive, welcoming environment.

So, as you gear up for the new academic year, remember these key factors and don’t forget to laugh a little. Whether it’s sharing a funny story during orientation or organizing a staff talent show (where you may or may not showcase your hidden karaoke skills), a bit of humour can make the journey smoother and more enjoyable.

God luck with a fantastic new academic year, filled with learning, growth, and a lot of laughter!

Bio

Award Winning Inclusion Advocate, Founder, International Inspector, Iron (Wo)Man, and passionate about SDG8 Dr Catherine O'Farrell is one of the founders of Incluzun.com, an organisation holistically supporting people of determination across the MENA region.
